Mike Jones had a successful weekend of racing at the Formula Xtreme Championship held at Eastern Creek, NSW on 3 and 4 of July. After the cancellation of the 4th round of ASBK at Broadford Raceway, Vic, Mike took the opportunity to further his skills with the California Superbike School and experiment with suspension settings with his suspension technician, Stewart from SW Racing.
Freezing temperatures and a cold track were in place for Friday's practice. Progress was made throughout the day to optimize rear grip which lead to a lap time of 1.38.
A huge downpour through the night left a damp track for Saturday morning's qualifying although the sun was out which gave a much more comfortable temperature. Mike qualified in 4th place which was a great effort in the tricky conditions. He placed 5th in race 1 and 3rd in races 2 and 3. These successful results this gave Mike an exciting 4th place overall for the day. Mike continually improved on his lap times throughout the day with his fastest of 1.37.
Sunday provided a fine and clear day for some great racing. Further suspension changes were made in the early morning, before qualifying. Unfortunately, the changes weren't as good but Mike managed to qualify in 6th position.
Race 1 was split into two parts due to a red flag. Mike was in 7th when the red flag came out and he started from this position in part two. Mike made a great effort to finish 4th in part two. With the combined times from part one and two, Mike finished 5th for race 1. The suspension changes with S.W. Racing and riding improvements with the California Superbike School paid off as Mike set a lap time of 1.36.6.
With a whopping field of 40 bikes, a poor start in race 2 left Mike with some work to do. A hard charge all race brought Mike all the way up to 4th place at the finish line. With the suspension working well, Mike set another impressive lap time of 1.36.6.
Mike made a good start for race 3 going with the front pack of riders. With the tyres going off, it was important to finish the race rather than crash going for the win. Mike was lucky not to fall when Jesse Austin lost the front end in turn 9 due to a lack of tyre grip. Mike placed 5th after a great effort of riding. For the overall results of Sunday, Mike finished in 4th place.
A very big thank you from Mike goes to all of his sponsors for their support; Yamaha, YRD, California Superbike School, SW Racing, Tech Spec, Skip’s Performance, Mick’s Fix, Ethos Orthodontics, Hansen Race Craft, Tampico Tools, KBC, RST and Alpinestars.
